AusLCI Carbon Emissions Factors dataset

The AusLCI Carbon Emissions Factors represent the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of products (kg CO2e / unit of products or services) that have been derived from the AusLCI database.

The emission factors have been derived from a version of the AusLCI database that links to Lifecycles background processes in the AusLCI-CF background dataset, i.e. not linked to the ecoinvent database.

Emission factors are available with different inclusions / exclusions:

  • The Total GHG values include GHG emissions from fossil fuel sources, biogenic sources including biogenic methane, and land use change (LUC).
  • The Carbon Neutrality Assumption values assume that all biogenic carbon sequestered (e.g. during growth of grown products) is eventually released back into the atmosphere (naturally decomposed, burned, metabolised), resulting in there being no net change of atmospheric carbon. Therefore it is the Total GHG method excluding biogenic GHGs.
  • The Fossil Carbon values include only GHG emissions from fossil fuel sources.
  • The Biogenic Carbon1 values include only biogenic carbon emissions and removals, including biogenic methane. Biogenic refer to carbon or methane that has been stored in, removed by, or emitted from biomass. For example, combustion of biomass, sequestration of C in wood.
  • The Land Use Change (LUC) values includes only fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from decreases or increases in vegetative and soil organic carbon stocks (SOC) stocks due to changes in land use and land cover.

All of the above do not include GHG emissions associated with infrastructure, since the AusLCI-CF background dataset does not currently include infrastructure items, but future versions will. Infrastructure refers to the upstream production of capital equipment. E.g. the tractor manufacture in a tractor operation process, or factory construction in a manufacturing process.

A new set of emission factors specifically for the construction sector is being developed and will be avalible soon.
